Earlier this year we released SS Penguin SOS, a middle grade novel by Adrienne Frater, based on the true sinking of the SS Penguin, and on the real-life heroine of the day, Ada Hannan.

If you, your child, or your class, has read the book we thought you'd be interested in this RNZ news and audio link with information available at Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision about the sinking of SS Penguin.

In the radio interview, Sarah Johnston talks with Jesse Mulligan about her search of the sound archives of Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision for memories of the sinking of the S.S. Penguin in February 1909.

“1909 is a long time ago, so when I started looking in the sound archives I wasn’t really expecting to find much recorded sound about this disaster. I did find a few however,” Sarah says.
